things your supervisor should do

A mentor told me that when problems come up, sometimes the best thing I can do is NOT try to solve them. It's to engage the team. The best response is always the question: what can we do to solve this problem?

Which leads me to a short list I'm starting... things a good leader should vs. shouldn't do:

Your supervisor should:
1) Clear obstacles that keep you from improving your company and/or products
2) Plant the flag on the hill so everyone shares the same long term strategy that contributes to larger organizational goals
3) Contribute problem-solving ideas when you're stuck, just like everyone else on the team

Your supervisor should not:
1) Solve all your problems
2) Tell you what to do every day
3) Be the bottleneck that holds everyone up

I'm currently taking a conflict management course through continuing education at one of the local Universities and this is very related. :)

One of the key things that I'm learning about how to deal with conflict/issues is to ask effecting questions that draw out more of the individual's story, listening without proposing solutions to understand the issue and summarizing what I feel the issue to be so that it's mutually understood. THEN work towards resolving the issue. It's changing the way I deal with issues..slowly but surely.

Also related, I'm currently listening to the audiobook (which I borrowed from the library) "Good Leaders Ask Great Questions" by John C.Maxwell. It's seriously chock full of general good advice for leaders. He's at a much higher level, but there is much to be gleaned. I think I may need to listen to it twice THEN buy the book.

It's unfortunate that he's related to the Skyline Church (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyline_Church) and their political leanings, but his views on leadership are interesting.

Good approach, I think... I may need to keep this in mind more than ever.

Re. JC Maxwell, I get the idea that Skyline got kinda loony after he left, but I'm not sure.
