when I get flying again...

If you're someone who friended me when I was a cool student pilot, rejoice, I have a plan to get back to it. no more of this baby stuff!

It won't be for at least another month, because right now, freezing is the high temperature most days. yes. earlier this week it was ten degrees during the DAY. I will not freeze my ass off to fly.

but my flying club gave me an offer I couldn't refuse to re-join and get current again. what's more, they're offering a "copilot" sort of class for spouses! so not only will I be flying, but if enrollment goes well, marc will finally get a turn!

someone asked me why I didn't just teach marc to fly a little bit because oh who would know. why not just let him take the wheel for a minute?

first, because that's against the rules. against not FAA rules, but REALLY against club rules, likely for insurance purposes. marc can sit by me but he cannot touch anything. he can help me spot airplanes and airports and other helpful things, but no flying.

second, even if it wasn't against the rules, a certified flight instructor (CFI) is trained in how to let a total idiot take the airplane down to three inches off the runway and they know when to grab the wheel or assist... that's huge. a dumbass in a single engine at 5,000 feet can't do much damage, they could turn and bank the airplane, probably won't be comfortable themselves with banking it over far enough that it becomes an issues. the airplanes I fly are so hard to get into a spin anyway. but for marc to learn anything about flying he has to do riskier stuff that a CFI will help with and I am not a CFI.

as the saying goes, flying requires airspeed, altitude, and a plan... or at least two out of three.

so before we take off there's even a test where you pull the control column all the way back, left, right, all the way in, make sure you have a full range of motion. my instructor told me that's to check and make sure they haven't rigged the ailerons backwards but even more, I think it's to make your passenger aware of where they can keep their knees out of the way.

if you ever fly with me, no touching anything. well, you can touch the air vents. open the window. move your seat back.

no making the airplane do anything.

Could you write a bit about the costs associated with flying? How much was spent on lessons and for how long? How much are the ongoing costs in a typical club? What is the purpose of a club like you mention?

It is NOT NOT NOT against FAA rules! It might well be against club rules, and instructing one's spouse is always a recipe for disaster, but as far as the FAA is concerned if the requisite number of qualified pilots are aboard and one of them has a set of controls, any damned monkey can fly the airplane as much as he, she, or it wants; the PIC isn't required to touch a thing, just take responsibility for assuring the safety of the flight.

I was wondering about that. Don't remember any such rule back when I was flying.
