Happy thanksgiving!

I only have a few things to say:

1) Happy Thanksgiving!

2) We're making our own cream corn today :) I was googling recipes and found one on Paula Deen for creamed corn casserole... Marc asked if every word started with "K".

3) This is actually our second thanksgiving this year, the first being at my mom's last weekend. That turkey was incredible, Josie ate a ton of it, I hope we live up to her expectations now. Also spent the weekend playing legos and Clue with my sister and BIL and had a blast.

4) people for heavens sake, DO NOT GO SHOPPING TODAY! Shun the materialism for a few hours, tell retail stores to give their employees one whole day off! I'm really offended about the "black Friday starts early!" sales. It's not enough that Christmas is all about shopping now, they want more? Screw that.

5) Riesling. A good idea with turkey.

6) planes, trains, and automobiles is on netflix if you need a holiday-appropriate movie!

Okay, six things. I had six things to say :)

I wish we could skip shopping today. Unfortunately, my stepson's mother failed to inform us he grew two clothing sizes over the last year, and we have no underwear in his size. Sigh. I actually think I'm more pissed off that I have to compromise my support of workers having today off than I am about her failure to communicate.

Regarding #4, a friend of mine posted this: http://www.misszoot.com/2013/11/25/shopping-on-thanksgiving/

It really made me rethink the whole "don't shop!" propaganda that's been going around. Yes, companies forcing their employees to work when they want not to be there sucks, but there are plenty of places where people DO work that we are all totally okay with an even expect. Plus there is this really classist element to assuming that everyone that gets the day off is getting a paid holiday. I dunno. I really reframed the debate for me.

I glanced over it, but will give it a more thorough read-through when I have time. Thanks for sharing.

It's a complicated issue. Really what we should be doing is paying everyone a real living wage instead of making them scramble for "extra overtime" hours in an attempt to be able to eat.

How was the creamed corn? Recipe? (if it was good)

not too good.

we used a combination of recipes, they're all really simple, basically cream, and corn. well, a little sugar/butter/etc. but the cream was thin and didn't "stick" to the corn... I'm used to the crap out of a can so maybe that's not the way it's supposed to be but who knows, we might try again.
