But then I spend a fscking HOUR AND A HALF trying to compile my first hello, world thing. I am so frustrated I can't even think about it - am I supposed to be mad at...
It says to type "javac HelloWorldApp.java" at the command line but when I do it just says " 'javac' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." So then I type "C:\Java\j2re1.4.0\bin\javac HelloWorldApp.java" and get basically the same error (with my path this time)
Yes, I changed my paths variable in the control panel (I'm in windows 2000) so javac would work.
No, I don't have a clue about how paths or commands or anything works in windows. Am I supposed to have a javac file somewhere or something?
Yes, I was enrolled in a Java class for three weeks until I dropped the class because I couldn't compile anything. The teacher wouldn't help me because he was a worthless ahole who told me to get out of his office and "just figure it out" (he's another story though, ask dave if you want to know more special stories about this particular waste of carbon atoms).
Yes, I am an electrical engineer trying to code. And I have a chronic bad habit, I'm finding, of running operating systems on my desktop that I don't care to fully understand the ins and outs of. I like to think I'm learning. Apparently not.
I checked the installation instructions (sigh) for the java runtime environment and it just said I was supposed to click on the .exe file and let it install. I did that! Then I uninstalled. Then I reinstalled. Then I restarted my computer because I know Windows likes to restart after taxing experiences.
I am waaay too tired for this, I really just want to have a relaxing day where everything works in my life.
That's it, I'm changing my major to home economics.

epi_lj gets my hero of the day award for pointing out a file download that I greatly overlooked because I am, sadly, not as smart as I like to think I am. Thanks epi. I'm compiling now.
