i caught news today that congress passed the intellectual property bill, establishing a new government office to better enforce piracy and counterfeiting. It's apparently supposed to protect us from terrorism (isn't it always) but its major sponsors are the recording and entertainment industries, who are tired of paying their own lawyers to sue you music sharing, movie stealing evil-doers. Instead, they funded enough senate and congressional campaigns that your tax dollars will fund investigations instead... the entertainment spent $20M lobbying congress last year, and ranks 11th in campaign funding. and it's an election year.
oh, and based on the new laws, an extra $50M was set aside to help state and local governments seize computers if they think you're pirating music. you don't have to be proven guilty.
we really do have the best government money can buy.
