Ice cream truck

I get home from work Friday to hear marc and josie both running out the front door. I go about my routine anyway... set my stuff down, wash my hands, change clothes, make sure Olive hasn't been carried off by a pack of wolves. then the duo comes running back in with josie bouncing up and down like she's on crazy pills but nope, it's just ice cream. I'm like "You bought her an ice cream from the TRUCK? Dude, you have to live with this child all day, think about what you've done!"

Neither of us knew how Josie learned that it was an ice cream truck - we'd been saying it was just a guy with a loud radio. When she did find out, Marc told her that the music meant it was out of ice cream... she also saw through that one. I considered telling her that it was some kind of bug catcher with a truck full of toxic insects. Anything to keep her from knowing the truth: that it was full of ice cream.

Marc thinks he'll be fine because he so rarely has cash on hand, and Josie is pretty good at understanding "We don't have money for that", but she's disappointed about it, and tells random strangers that we can't afford ice cream, so eventually marc caved.

I couldn't help but be excited for her. we all had a bite of her ice cream bar, it was a fun happy occasion. Then I was like "Josie what did you do today?" and she said "I GOT ICE CREAM FROM THE ICE CREAM TRUCK!"

"Yes baby, but what else did you do today? Didn't you have school?"

silence

Marc says: "Jojo! tell mama about the butterflies we saw at the butterfly house today!" (he'd taken her to Botanica - also very special)

silence

I'm like "Josie, where did daddy take you today?"

After a moment of thinking she looks at me and says, "To the ice cream truck!"

See? It's like toddler crack - all short term memory erased, like a giant preschool delete button.

Never tell a small child the truth about ice cream trucks. Never. I don't know what satellites beamed this knowledge into her little head, but our lives will never be the same.
