marc's diet update

So a while back I wrote about Marc going on a diet. It's a 12 week thing, he's at around week 8. It basically goes until the end of January. But he made it through the holidays sticking to it which is awesome!

He's doing an HMR (Health Management Resources) program through a local hospital (Via Christi). They give him all the entrees he's allowed to eat, and he has to add fruits & veggies. There's a short list of allowable condiments. He eats about 1500 calories a day and tries to work out several times a week. He keeps track of everything he eats and attends a weekly group meeting with other people in the program, and a facilitator.

He's totally the star of his class and making everyone jealous with how much weight he's lost! He's got a lot going for him though. First, he's only 32, it's a lot easier to work with your metabolism in your 30s than your 50s. Second, he's male. Third, he has no major health issues to keep him from working out and being active. They give you a health club membership while you're in the program and he likes hitting the treadmill, so that's been good.

He's lost almost 50 pounds! I'd probably better not tell you what he weighed before... let's just say less than 300. He was overweight enough that doctors were concerned. Never really phased me though, I never really would have described him as obese, just sort of a big guy. I mean when you're 6'2" and broad-shouldered you're just going to be big. But he had put on weight since our wedding, I could see it in pictures, and I wanted to be very supportive of his diet.

I think he's going to enroll in a "phase II" of the program, but even if he was going to stop he's found some diet-y things that he can keep doing for a while. I mean sure, part of the diet involves cutting out all alcohol and I just don't see him doing that forever. But he has done some other good stuff like:

- Eats more than 5 fruits and vegetables a day. Favorites are salads with fat-free dressing and loads of bell peppers and tomatoes as topping, cans of fruit packed in water or fruit juice, and honeycrisp apples
- Looks at calories of what he's eating
- Totally switched up breakfast. He used to eat giant burrittos with eggs and cheese, now it's a can of peaches and a shake blended with banana. Or an egg white omelet with some salsa.

Last weekend we were at the zoo and I saw this picnic bench where we took a photo back in September-ish, so I had him sit there again for a "diet in progress" shot. Check him out:

Same hotness, less man! I gotta say, I'm proud of him.
