my good friend tabloidscully shared this a few days ago, and I wholeheartedly agree:

April Fool's is coming up. I like a good joke as much as the next. But I'm also hoping that this year, my friend's list won't be inundated with people posting "jokes" that poke fun at really harmful, painful experiences. This includes, but is not limited to: fake pregnancy tests, images doctored to look like someone was a victim of domestic violence, claiming to have committed a crime when they didn't, experienced a crime that didn't take place or people posting about people dying when they haven't. If it's on this list, it's become some ridiculous fool on my friend's list at some point or another has ACTUALLY done this.

I don't know if it contains crimes you can commit, isn't that even in the US illegal? At least here you shouldn't post stuff like this because juristically you will be always taken seriously.

Hear, hear! I used to be quite the prankster, but mine were limited to taping down phone hooks, gluing things in place and the like. I haven't done anything like that in years.

No worries - no 'fake' anything from me.

I hate the stupid that people feel they need to do because of a date on the calendar

Im thinking if anyone does anything on that list I would more than likely remove them. I'm 40. Practical jokes lost their funny when I was 12.

I know, right. Having been through the first two (and never even considered the third or fourth) it really bothers me when people trivialize and joke about things like that.
I hate that I don't know who to trust one the 1st of April, and that sucks.
Bad things don't take a holiday.. they just get buried by 'pranks' for a day. =(

I hate April Fool's Day. It's the most pointless and annoying holiday of all, in my opinion. I'm up for a good prank, but a day dedicated to one is just asking for trouble. :/

I am definitely with your friend on this.

Ugh. I'm glad the ones my friends are posting are actually sort of funny. Well the still make fun of things (like one is joining Scientology and one got a job at Playboy magazine) but they are still kind of funny....who makes it look like they were beat up? That is so silly.

I'm the person who wrote this status update, and I started posting some version or another of this three years ago after my husband's niece posted a doctored photo of herself looking like a domestic abuse victim with the tagline that her husband had beaten her. Her mom responded, "Well, next time, have him save a piece for me."

It was disgusting. I'll see if I can find the photo so people don't think I'm being batshit insane about this.

I suppose the only thing good thing about that is the niece's friends, colleagues and family know that they can't trust her at all if they ever do have serious problem, particularly if they have been abused or have found out that someone else is.
The bad thing is that they may never tell anyone, thinking everyone thinks it funny. You are clearly doing your best to make it plain that everyone isn't like you niece in this, so thank you.

I just spent 20 minutes combing through her Facebook page for the picture, but couldn't find it, and I'm burned out on continuing to comb through 4,000+ selfies. I might have my husband message her for it.

Also, not to hijack this post, but sadly, she's actually one of the better ones in that family. So my anger and outrage (as well as my husband's) was largely ignored. The niece's mother, my husband's sister, has actually been a battered woman and told us it was no big deal. It was gross.

I'm all for silly little jokes that I know people will laugh at rather than feel embarrassed by but some people just have taken the day to a level where enjoyment is impossible.

I'm one of those "sensitive" people who is always killing everyone's joy in jokes and pranks. It's just that 99% of the time the joke is laughing AT people. Or baiting people who make the (terrible, horrible) mistake of trusting their friends. And it's just too mean for me. (Of course, I also can't watch large chunks of many "comedies" for the same reason. The shame and embarrassment are so much I have to cover my eyes.)

I hate April Fool's Day, practical jokes and pranks. They are designed to make someone feel foolish and embarrassed. If the victim protests, they are told, "Hey, can't you take a joke?" which is the MO of the abuser. No thanks.

Weirdly a friend announced she was preggers and then today was like "no guys I actually am, in case you thought it was a joke..." because she didn't realize people did stupid jokes like that.

Thank goodness all my friends are older than twelve. Seriously, people do this stuff? Grown-up people?
