lightning bugs

So my aunt posted a fb status about watching little kids play with lightning bugs and how it makes her think of summer. It was sweet, I do love seeing the little flashes in the yard. She also wrote, "remember making shiny 'rings' when we were little?"

And I just thought, "I remember catching lightning bugs, then I remember the time my aunts showed me you can rip out their butts and wear them as jewelry and I was like 'AHHHHHHH ZOMG WTF DID HE DO TO YOU!??!!'"

Animal cruelty! Maybe I was too old when they showed me that trick or something? Not a fond childhood memory!

My cousins did this when I was younger as well. I always got really sad.

I'd seen it done, but I could never bring myself to do it.

Jewelry, huh? When I was a kid, we smashed their butts on our fingernails as nail polish.

Certainly I wouldn't do it now, but "cruel" doesn't seem the right word either: I was a little kid and didn't have the moral maturity to imagine why it might not be a good idea.

Now, the grownups who encouraged the behavior, I'm not sure what their excuse was...

What scares me is not that they did it, but that (a) as adults it's still a fond memory and (b) they tried to pass it on. D :

I have a hard time even squishing ants... : /
